What is 17-OHP Neonatal Screening (Dried Blood Spot) test?
This newborn screening test measures 17-Hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), a hormone made by the adrenal glands. It is performed on a dried blood spot (DBS) sample collected via a gentle heel prick. Elevated 17-OHP can suggest Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH)—a condition that may cause salt loss, dehydration, and growth/hormonal issues if not detected early. Early screening helps ensure timely medical care.
Who should take this test?
- All newborns as part of routine newborn screening (as advised by pediatrician).
- Babies with family history of CAH or adrenal/hormonal disorders.
- Newborns with signs like poor feeding, vomiting, dehydration, or excessive sleepiness (doctor-advised).
- Babies with ambiguous genitalia or suspected endocrine imbalance (doctor-advised).
- Preterm / low birth weight babies may also be screened as per pediatric protocol.
Preparation & Test Process
2) A quick, gentle heel prick is done with a sterile lancet.
3) A few drops of blood are placed on a DBS filter paper card in marked circles.
4) The card is air-dried and then sent for analysis.
How to interpret results
The report shows the 17-OHP level measured from the dried blood spot.
Newborn reference cut-offs can vary based on age in hours, birth weight, and prematurity.
High / Borderline result does not always confirm disease, but may require:
repeat DBS screening and/or serum (blood) confirmation tests as per pediatrician/endocrinologist advice.
Screening tests are not final diagnosis. Please consult your pediatrician for next steps.
